Jazz, Java and Jesus Blog Tour

Aleysha Proctor is an award winning Christian inspirational author & entrepreneur. She’s the author of three books; “With Style & Amazing Grace”, “He’s the Keeper of My Soul” and “Jazz, Java & Jesus”. Her passion in life is helping to inspire people to use their potential now.

Aleysha dropped by my blog today to tell us a little bit about her latest book release, Jazz, Java and Jesus.

What inspired you to write this book?

“Jazz, Java & Jesus” is my 3rd book, and it’s a result of me writing for an online Bible study group for 18 months. I knew that I needed to put all of the devotions together in one product and get it out to the masses for encouragement and hope.

Who are your three favorite non-fiction writers and why?

Michelle McKinney Hammond, John C. Maxwell and Max Lucado.  I like Michelle McKinney Hammond because of her frankness and sense of humor while sticking to the Scriptures.  I like John C. Maxwell because he talks about leadership and business issues while tying things back to the Word of God. I like Max Lucado because he encourages you in the things of God.

Who are your three favorite fiction writers and why?

Because I lead such a busy lifestyle, I don’t read a lot of fiction publications. However, I can say that I really enjoy Pat G’orge Walker’s work-she is hilarious!!

About the Book

Twenty-four Christian devotions and puzzles about jazz, java and Jesus. The perfect book to take to a coffee or tea house, or anywhere, and meditate on the promises of God.

Book Review by Linda D. Fegins (http:ladyofprayer.com)

Jazz, Java and Jesus by Aleysha R. Proctor  was a joy to  read. This devotional, like its name ,has a  fresh style but is  full of the Word and divine wisdom without being preachy or  super-analytical. The  daily devotionals seemed as though they were  personally written for you as the reader. The devotionals addressed real issues affecting you in a real way and gave you practical  advice grounded in the Word. This “jazzy” devotional is  highly recommended to sooth your soul and to help you  reaffirm who you are in the Lord . I have even paraphrased one devotional topic “It’s All Working Together for Your Good!” on my Facebook page this past Tuesday.

She is an ordained “exhorter” in her church, explaining, “God has called me to exhort readers and to help them rediscover their place with the Lord.”

A Love for Tomorrow is the second book in the Second Chance at Love series

About the Book

When Christian talk show host Serenity Williams’ fiancé calls off their wedding because he can’t deal with her popularity, she determines that she will never fall in love with another pride-filled, ego-driven pastor. Then, Serenity’s producer asks her to interview the charismatic Pastor Phillip McKnight, who has recently gone through a divorce. Serenity feels that this is her chance to expose the arrogance of ego-filled pastors to the world. But Pastor Phillip is broken and humbled from his experiences, and the surprising humility of this man causes Serenity to want to un-break his heart. However, Serenity will need the Lord to fix her heart and change her mind about male preachers before she and Phillip can become all they were meant to be to each other.

Book Review

I loved Vanessa Miller’s Yesterday’s Promise  which is  a delightful romantic story that addresses   the relevant social issue of women in ministry with honesty in a balanced manner.  A Love  for Tommorw  contines to explore the theme of women in the ministry. This time we see issues that  women in ministry or any  ministerial leader  must address which  could impact the integrity and effectiveness of their ministry. Further , it explores the negative impact being a ” preacher’s kid” can have on that son or daughter’s view of church.  It also touches upon the issue of  male ministerial leaders with big ego’s  being threatened by  a  female minister’s anointing. Miller’s simple crisp language and style  and well developed characters makes  this an enjoyable  book to read.

Kamilah Wright has a lot on her shoulders for someone entering their senior year of high school. Not only does her mom expect her to raise the other seven children in their home, but she’s also required to turn a blind eye to her father’s infidelity, as well as maintain a perfect 4.0 GPA in order to get the academic scholarship she desperately needs to attend college. Through all of this Kamilah convinces herself that she has everything under control.

That is until she meets Summer Freeman. The beautiful new girl at school, Summer introduces Kamilah to a lifestyle that she’s never known, including fashion, luxury, and alternative viewpoints that conflict with her Christian upbringing. Pretty soon the love she has for her new friend evolves into something more, and Kamilah has to prove which love she will devote herself to. Will she stay in the same sex relationship that feels so right, or will she embrace the faith she didn’t know meant so much to her.

In  Sweeter Than the Honey  by LaShanda Michelle Kamilah Wright, is an excellent  high school senior, a rape victim  with low self-esteem and serves as the housekeeper and surrogate mother for her seven brothers and sisters while her mother works and father comes and goes as he pleases. She holds a long-time crush on her best friend, Eric, and can’t bring herself to tell him her true feelings.  Summer Freeman ,is  the new girl in school, who turns heads the minute she steps in the door.  Eric  turns his attention to Summer.

Summer is a free spirit who opens up a whole new world to Kamilah. She opens up Kamilah’s eyes to fashion, make-up and sexuality.  Kamilah’s friendship with Summer grows to more than what is acceptable in the church, God’s eyes, Kamilah’s mother and society. She has to make a decision between what the Word of God states according to her Christian upbringing and alternative viewpoints that say that this is an acceptable relationship. Will Summer come to believe in the Lord, Jesus Christ?

LaShanda Michelle with compassion, yet honesty deals with this controversial subject, of young women struggling with their sexual identity.  The church, for the most part, does not always, lovingly but firmly, confront the subject of homosexuality in a way where true healing and deliverance can occur.  This story should encourage those of us who are ministry leaders and believers to think about how we can address this issue in our churches. LaShanda’s style of writing keeps the readers intrigued.

Soon After Blog Tour

Multi-published author, teacher, wife and mother, Sherryle seeks to be a fresh voice in Christian Fiction. Her triumphant debut novel, Soon and Very Soon (2007) was followed up by her sophomore release, The Manual (2009). Soon After marks the return of her franchise characters, Pastors WIllie and Vanessa Green and the Harvest Baptist church saga. Sherrryle is currently working on her fourth novel for Urban Christian (Urban/Kensington) titled Taylor-Made. She currently lives in Maryland with her husband and two children.

About the Book

The Ministry birthed by one will be exploited by another. Can Willie Green stand idly by and let that happen?

When Pastors Willie Green and Vanessa Morton got married and moved to merge their churches, they never expected so much resistance. Now it seems someone is sending a strong message by setting fire to the Harvest Baptist Church building.

The newly unified Pleasant Harvest Baptist Church is no more than four months into business as usual before Co-Pastor Willie Green is drawn into the middle of an arson investigation. Alexis Montgomery, an overzealous reporter, sees the experienced pastor as a great source to latch onto as she tries to unearth the stories that might solve the crime. Instead of being bothered by the presence of this woman, Co-Pastor Vanessa uses it as a distraction to help conceal her own secrets.

Orchestrating the unification rift makes Deacon Charley Thompson a prime suspect. His unexpected silence only fuels the accusations of guilt, and his meek wife becomes his unlikely spokesperson. Meanwhile, his nephew, Abe Townsend, couldn’t care less about family allegiances. Led by an anonymous publicist, Abe and the remaining displaced members of Harvest Baptist Church gain notoriety when news reports garner an outcry of sympathy and support.

What should have been a simple unification of two churches has turned into something much more complicated, and it will take plenty of faith to hold it all.

 Book Review by Linda Fegins

First I must confess that I was not  excited about reading this book. Oh , another cheating husband and a women fighting for her husband. Same oh song.

Not so. OMG! From the first  two pages (really first) ,Rhonda McKnight and her character Samaria and the Women’s Bible Study group  had me.  I read the first page and the half of the second page again.  I wrote on the page great opening.   Throughout the book  you see McKnight’s writing skill and grace with a jazzy style. This story  was  more than just about a  cheating husband and a scheming un-churched  woman who dared to go to the same church as the wife, sit in the wife’s  Women’s Bible Study  class and befriend her  so that she could become her clone and steal her husband. Scandalous!  This is a fresh creative story by Rhonda McKnight.

The heart of the story is about women friendships, trust,  redemption and  how even in the midst of mess God can use it to make a change in a heart for His Glory. You walk with the characters as they address issues of disappointment ,  betrayal ,forgiveness, low self-esteem  and overcoming patterns of  living a negative lifestyle and mindset. The characters were  memorable , real and well-developed.

I can’t wait for the sequel.   How will Samaria change her life around and can she help her mother?  Will she find love and peace?  Will successful Angelina leave her handsome surgeon husband?    Can Angelina find a way to forgive Samaria who has come to admire and respect her and truly think of her  as a beautiful virtuous women who was the first woman to every truly show her love and real friendship?

Destined Blog Tour

PATRICIA HALEY is the trailblazing, #1 Essence bestselling author of seven faith-based, novels, including Let Sleeping Dogs Lie, No Regrets, and Chosen. She’s a  project manager with degrees from Stanford University and the University of Chicago. She is a born again believer and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Patricia lives with her husband and daughter in Philadelphia.

Visit her on www.patriciahaley.com or become a fan of Author Patricia Haley on Facebook.

What inspired you to write this book bringing in another country and conflict in the family?

Of all my seven novels and two short stories, Destined and Chosen most reflect a blend of my background and interests. I’m a businesswoman with a deep and unconditional love for family, coupled with a passion for traveling. My husband and I plan to visit all seven continents and the fifty states. We’ve done five so far (S. America, Asia, Africa, Europe, and of course N. America) and 35 states. Traveling abroad has been such an integral part of my life and experiences, yet, I’d never really brought any of those international perspectives to my stories. So, my Chosen series seemed like the natural place to combine corporate intrigue, family drama, and snippets of South Africa, a place where tolerance and forgiveness is exemplified through the life of Nelson Mandela (one of my modern day heroes) along with the South of France, a memorable spot for me and my husband.

Of your books what is your favorite character and why?

My favorite character, who happens to show up in all my stories, is a little old lady named Emma Walker or Big Mama as she is affectionately labeled.  I love her presence because Big Mama always brings words of wisdom and spiritual guidance with dashes of humor and sincerity.

What suggestions or advice would you give writers about the process of writing?

Read, Write, and Relax.  The ability to tell a story is a God-given talent –either you have it or you don’t. However, the ability to tell a story better comes from mastering the craft.  That’s the part that comes from discipline, practice, teachings, mentoring, and attending workshops.  The more you read, the more you learn about different styles as well as what works and what doesn’t.  In order to get better at writing, like most other areas in life, you have to practice —write, write, write.  Some say you need to write every day.  I believe you have to figure out what works for you whether it’s every day, every other day, or whatever schedule you establish, be committed and stick to your routine.  People often ask, “How do I get started?”  That’s such an easy answer, “Just start.  Sit down and write the first word. Doesn’t matter how good it is getting started, just push aside distractions and procrastination obstacles and get started.” Lastly, take a deep breath and relax, enjoy the literary journey.  Being an author is about more than just cranking out a manuscript.  It’s about the process of taking an idea and forming it into something tangible that others can read and ideally be blessed, inspired, enlightened, or encouraged as a result.

 About the Book

Destined by Patricia Haley is the second novel in the Chosen series, inspired by the popular biblical kings David and Solomon.

Don, the eldest son and rightful heir to the ministry, returns from South Africa after three years of self-imposed exile. With a renewed zeal to reclaim the leadership of his late father’s multi-million dollar ministry, his plans are short-lived when a stock transfer agreement goes wrong, rendering Don powerless. Don’s little brother Joel continues as CEO, careening down the path of personal, professional, and spiritual demise, as he drags the ministry down with him. The only hope to save their father’s legacy is Don’s intervention, and so clinging to his self-worth and faith, Don is torn between fighting for a company he wasn’t chosen to run and fleeing back to his South African refuge, a place where his peace, his growing relationship with Naledi, and his dignity aren’t in question. After much soul searching, Don comes to realize that his destiny is inescapable and that his future lies in his family’s legacy.

Combining spiritual themes with family tension, corporate intrigue, and romance, this series is an exciting addition to the faith-based fiction market.

 Book Review  by Linda Fegins

Destined combines spiritual themes such as unforgiveness and taking steps of faith to pursue one’s destiny with  issues of family conflict, corporate intrigue , lust and romance. Don, the rightful heir of a multi-million dollar ministry was overlooked by his father who left the business to his younger brother, Joel, who is the son of a second wife. Joel’s leadership has caused the ministry to spiral downward.  After experiencing the pain of rejection, Don flees to South Africa to nurse his hurt and to rebuild his life with a thriving new business. Don is faced with a decision to either stay away, or to intervene and save the ministry.

Watching how God worked in this corporate and family drama to allow Don to recognize his destiny was exciting and inspiring.  It reminds one that God “can work all things together” for one to pursue their destiny.

This riveting storyline stretched my imagination, as it embraced other cultures, although some might question the plausibility of some aspects of the book.  Not I.  Destined is an intriguing read with a subtle inspirational message woven into the story. The manner of how the book ended was a surprise to me. Not the result, but the twist in how the result was achieved. Haley engages one with subtle intrigue and touches of comedy, just as in Let Sleeping Dogs Lie. I am awaiting Broken; the third book in the series because I need to know more about the self-exiled sister Tamara.

About the Book

Looking for Love . . .

Lifelong friends Coco, Nita, and Audra have spent years looking for love in the arms of flashy pro athletes, hoping to land a baller but ending up with a stream of failed relationships. The beautiful and demure Coco has endured years of physical abuse from her boyfriend, Sonny, while Audra, a single mother, has dated her fair share of cheaters and yearns for a stable companion who will be a father figure to her son. And feisty, seductive Nita is tired of being the million-dollar mistress and wants to settle down—if she can find someone worth coming home to.

Changing the Game . . .

Now that the women are approaching thirty, they’re finding it harder than ever to compete with the pro groupies. Determined to change the game and find some worthwhile men, Audra hatches an outrageous plan. Soon the trio is “holy rolling,” masquerading as God-fearing churchgoers at a local conference for young ministers in the hopes of snagging a prominent pastor. But will their big gamble pay off? Men of the cloth are still just men, after all. As the three friends meet their potential life partners, they will have to decide how far they want to take their holy rollers scheme—each risking heartbreak while taking a chance on finding a reliable, responsible man to love and cherish, flaws and all.

Book Review by Linda Fegins

We all know too well about groupies pursuing professional athletes. Now we are introduced to a real and growing trend, groupies trying to catch prominent pastors and ministers. In Reshonda Tate Billingsley’s Holy Rollers ,three lifelong friends are facing thirty, without a committed or wholesome relationship with a pro- athlete. Tired of failed relationships, they decide to attend a ministers’ conference masquerading as “holy and devout” churchgoers with the intention of capturing the heart or desire of a prominent pastor.

This fresh and fast paced story about the encounters of Coca, Nita and Audra with men of the cloth will keep you turning pages to determine whether they will make the right decisions to accomplish their quest.  Sweet and humble Coca, short- sighted and needy Audra, and smart, sophisticated bad girl Nita were realistic and represent women you and I know or may have known.

Clothed in humor and wit, that makes you laugh, this original story strategically addresses several real issues for women.  Without being preachy, but leaving that to my favorite character the outspoken babysitter, Ms Bea,  Holly Rollers  addresses such issues as looking for “love” for the wrong reasons and in the wrong places and smart good- looking sisters making poor choices in men and in life, due to a lack of self-esteem or due to the “issues” of their past.  The prevalent issue of domestic violence is carefully woven in the story.

This is a great story and would be a good book club selection. I would dare to suggest it as teaching tool for a women’s ministry as an interesting way to teach about pre-marital sex, selecting mates, faith, friendships, self-esteem and righteous conduct.

In the past I have over-looked Billingsley’s books. Today, I am going to start reading Can I Get a Witness?

Daddy’s Delight Blog Tour

Daddy’s Delight  by Karia Bunting

KARIA BUNTING is an expository Bible teacher whose mission is to communicate the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ so that people are saved, and disciples are developed. She is the founder of Focused Forward Ministries, a communication and media ministry, and a member of several community and ministry organizations. She also partners with her husband, George, in his management & financial consulting company.

Karia received her master’s degree from Dallas Theological Seminary and a doctorate from Louisiana Baptist Theological Seminary. She’s currently receiving a second doctorate from the University of Texas. She serves as an adjunct professor at Dallas Baptist University and enjoys ministering the Word and its’ principles through her lecture series and power lunches held throughout the year.

Karia and George, her husband of 26 years, live in Dallas, Texas where she teaches the Word weekly in the women’s Bible study at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship. Mother of three children, Karia is also a mentor to many young women. She enjoys reading, writing, and spending time with family and friends.

What is the message you hope to present to your readers?

That God designed them, they have value because He gave it to them, and through application of His Word to every stage of life they can experience God’s freedom and accomplish their destiny.   When the Lord gave this book to me and to His women who will read it, I believe He wanted His Word  to set women free right where they are:  whether they are struggling with identity, are unmarried (which includes divorced and widowed), are married, are a working mom or a mom-at-home, are in business or ministry, are dealing with temptation, arrogance or confidence, or whether she just wakes up every morning and says “What am I doing here, and how do I get where I want to go?”   This book is based Word of God.  But it applies that Word in a real way to practical every day experiences that every woman has.  The stories I am hearing is that reading this book is changing people’s perspective, and therefore changing their life.  Not everyone, I am sure, but a lot of people are experiencing that.    It seems to be meeting people where they are in life.  Of course, I share  my life in the book as well, because I have lived this thing, so I know it works!

From the White house to the bus stop, we need to experience God’s freedom. We need to know how to not to be too stressed to be blessed.   Some of us are in a place where we wonder, “Who am I, and why am I here?  Others are saying, “I am glad I am here, what is next?” Still others  are asking “How do I get out of here?!”  This book answers those questions.

How does the message apply to life?

I am excited about what God is saying to his women.   First, take the area of identity.  Our sense of identity is falling apart.  It used to be that we knew who we were just because – we were so and so’s child, grandchild, or niece.  We came into womanhood under the tutalige of generations.  There was always someone around who would say, “Honey, that is not you”, or “Sweetheart, lift your head up.  You are better than that, and you can do better than that”.  There were even older women to rebuke us, who could seemingly see through us and provide us wisdom.

Those are ancient of days, aren’t they?  Seldom are people close enough to our lives to speak into it – to tell us why our marriage is falling apart, to help us keep our children straight, to tell us we are fine, loved, accepted, and cared for just as we are.   And sometimes it is not that there are not people who are willing to share our lives, we just don’t have the time in this generation to even listen!  We have to work, we have so much to do, and when we finish doing that, we still have stuff we didn’t get to!  God has a word of freedom for that.  We are killing ourselves, our health is failing, we are having heart attacks, high blood pressure, and everything else.  God wants to de-stress us and instruct us.  We were designed for the freedom to accomplish our destiny.  The question this book answers is how we implement that design.

 What is your next project?

We are working on a study guide to go along with Daddy’s Delight, so readers can integrate the principles into their life.   In September, I will start teaching the Word again at Life on Life again, a Bible study of about 150 women that meet at my home church, Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, TX.   We do not gather in the summer, so I am looking forward to seeing them in September.   The Lord has given our ministry a television broadcast – we are on Direct TV channel 378, Sky Angel 126, and we broadcast weekly at 10:30 Central Standard Time, 11:30 Eastern Standard Time.  Through Direct TV we go into over 11 million homes.

The ministry the Lord has given me, Focused Forward, beginning in September  also hosts a power lunch/taping every 2nd  Thursday in Plano, TX – if you are in the area, come on out!  And I do conference speaking, workshops, pastor’s conferences, and workshops in the United States and in places like Nigeria, Hati, and Papua New Guniea.  I am prayerful that the Lord will expand my conference speaking ministry.  I love sharing God’s Word with God’s Women!  I’ve started on the manuscript for my next book, so we are praying for God’s direction there.   We believe the Lord is moving us into radio, so your readers can listen in soon, if they are not able to TiVo or record the Thursday morning broadcasts.  Just a plug –  I will be teaching Women in Church Leadership at the Kingdom Agenda Conference and Teaching the Bible at the First Ladies Conference in October, the ministry of Dr Tony and Dr. Lois Evans,  mark your calenders!  Your readers can check out our website at www.focusedforwardministries.org to see what God is doing through His servant down in Dallas, TX.   Or, visit me on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Focused-Forward-Ministries-with-Dr-Karia-Bunting/124665357565978?ref=ts.

I had been in school forever, you know.  And part of my Th.D. program, get this, was to write a draft commentary of the Bible!  So, I found myself, in that process, attracted to what God had to say throughout scripture on our identity and authority.  I think that is where it started.  So I began working on the subject, and just writing notes, for several years.  Then, I found I had this huge pile of notes from the scripture.  I began to get it organized it, but never expected to do anything with it.  I put it into chapters, but it was really academic, I think.  Then my pastor preached a series on Spiritual authority.  I turned to my husband and said, “That’s my book!”  Everything he said in the whole series I had written in my notes!  So, with his support, I translated and expanded those notes so that they made sense (i.e. – absolutely practical and everyday stuff).  In the process of writing, it all changed and I began to speak from my heart.  But the undergirding of the whole process is the accurate and thorough exegesis of scripture.  That’s why the book seems to meld scripture and life seamlessly.

If you had the opportunity to talk with three writers, who would you choose and why?

Paul, W.E.B. Dubois, and Cornell West.

And I will get a chance to talk to Paul, just not here!  I want to know what He was thinking when he was writing.  I want him to explain how it felt to be wondering all over Asia, and what his thought processes were when he was imprisoned.  I want him to talk about growing up in the Ancient Near East.  I want him to talk about women in his culture, and what He was really trying to say, because I believe his position in the culture was counter-cultural.  I believe, for them, he was liberal.  I want him to talk about his relationship with other theologians during his time – who he got along well with and who he disagreed with.  I am just curious.

And W.E.B. Dubois was brilliant.  He championed black folk, but the word is, he was too arrogant to get along with them.  He was not a Christian.  He eventually gave up on America, and went to Ghana.   I want to argue with him, frankly.  I want to say to him, “Nothing is hopeless, my friend.  It is your brilliance that has backed you into a corner.”  I want him to beat me up with his superior intellect, and I want to hit Him with the Word of Truth.

And Cornell West.  One day I might get a chance to do that, I think.  I believe he is the most brilliant pragmatist alive.  My youngest daughter goes to Howard University, and had dinner with him a few weeks ago.  She said it was wonderful.  I sent a text to my oldest daughter, who is an actress in New York, and told her.  Ahe screamed AAAHHHHH!  He is her absolute favorite writer.

Anyway, this is academic but, I am a student of the idea of pragmatism.  I am interested in an oxymoron – what I call “epistemological pragmatism”.  I’d like to talk about ideas with him.  As you know, my second doctorate is in Humanities, and the dissertation kind of focused on the idea of pragmatism.  West is simply brilliant.  He has lived his philosophy.

What advice would you give to those who wish to write non-fiction?

Know your subject, and make it relevant.  O.K., this might be harsh (my children say I can be more than a little straightforward – that is in the book, too)   but if you don’t have anything to add to what has already been said, wait until you do.  Expand your reader’s base of information.    Let their life be impacted by reading your book in a way that it can’t be impacted by any other book.  In other words, this is the bottom line, love your reader.  If you don’t love them, you can’t help them.   As for me, I pray that I love God’s people passionately – that’s how I do it, at least.  You may have your own way.  But when I love them, I care what happens to them after they read my book.  The book is a means to an end – the end of them having a better life.   Love will make me sacrifice my time and sleep.  Love will drive me to give people what they need – what they really need.  Love makes my life not about me.  Being loved by God is how I live – how I get through.  And loving God’s people through my work is what I am called to do.  It has to be that way for anybody God will use to truly change people’s life through non– fiction.    Good non-fiction is love funneled through knowledge by means of language.

About the Book

In Daddy’s Delight, Dr. Karia Bunting reminds women that they are God’s workmanship, His masterpiece, His “poema”. That God has intricately woven together every fiber of their being and created each one special and unique. That God, having completed His work of art, gave her to mankind as a gift.

Evident in this great care God took in fashioning woman is the importance and value of each one. So why do so many women struggle with God’s design, wishing they could change just this or that one thing about themselves?

Dr. Bunting challenges each reader to accept and embrace the truth that, regardless of what season of life she’s in, she is God’s masterpiece-not her own work of art. When God sees her, He sees His beautiful creation. A creation that yes, has some wrinkles needing to be smoothed out and yet, is one in whom is His delight to love to perfection.
