Open this book, and let’s have a heart to heart conversation!

Book Review

Altars of the Heart challenges the reader to examine the hidden places of their own heart to confront issues that have stymied their spiritual growth and have blocked them from walking victoriously in every aspect of their lives. April Minger does a wonderful and sensitive job, without being preachy or theological, of showing how the condition of the heart is key to our relationship with God, living and effective fruitful life and our worship. I enjoyed the Chapter 9 “The Mind and Heart Connection”. The mind can hear the Word, but the heart has to believe it and act on it if the Word will have real effect in our lives.

This book is an interesting, with a sound biblical basis , study of how the heart affects every area of our lives. Minger presents the case to take inventory of our hearts, boldly investigate their true conditions, so that we may truly worship God in spirit and in truth and live victoriously, by applying and following biblical solutions

Kim Brooks Talks About Her New Book She That Findeth #shethatfindeth

What inspired you to write this book?

As a licensed minister to singles for the last 10 years and the author of a daily devotional for single women in which I receive feedback from subscribers as well, I’ve noticed many single women have similar issues when it comes to being single and matters of the heart. Also, as a 30-something woman with familial dreams of my own, I have experienced moments of desiring a mate myself, which is truly natural since Scripture says God will give the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4). It’s the waiting period that so many get impatient with as many God-fearing women wonder, “When will he come?” So I decided to place these feelings along with the feelings of others into one character by the name of Shenita Love (which stands for “She Needs a Love”) who, at 35, gets tired of waiting on God to send her a husband and decides to set out to get one on her own. In her quest to find a husband, her friends Jackie, Pippa, Danielle and RayShawn all have their own problems to deal with as well and by the end of the novel the reader discovers whether or not Shenita finds all she seeks.

What is your favorite chapter from the book and why?

My favorite chapter from the book is Chapter 56 near the end when all is forgiven from the three friends as Shenita and Jackie support Danielle in her future endeavor. It’s a nice “moment” between friends who, in spite of their different personalities and different personal issues with men, come together and be a blessing to one another as true friends should be.
What are three things you wish you’d known before you reached where you are now?
I wish I had known that just because you sign on with a major publisher doesn’t guarantee that they’ll market your book. When I signed my first book deal for my debut novel, He’s Fine…But is He Saved? years ago I assumed the distribution and marketing would be there. I eventually discovered that while the distribution was there (once the publisher realized there was a real demand for the book as at one point they were sold out because they didn’t print enough copies initially) the publisher solely depended on me to get the word out about the book to the masses. Thankfully, with the help of my publicist, Pam Perry, we were able to spread the word about the book to the point where it did become a bestseller with Black Expresssions Bookclub shortly after its release.
That’s the only thing I wish I had known, other than that I have no regrets and to this day consider everything a learning process.

Oprah always asks, What do you know for sure?

I know that Jesus is Lord and that He created each and every one of us with a purpose in life and it’s up to us to seek God and discover what it is. I know for sure that I was born to write. I also know for sure that I love Oprah 🙂

What did you learn while writing this book?

Interestingly enough, I learned that pole dancing isn’t just some freaky dance women do in order to get dollars from dudes. One of the characters gets tempted to go back to a pole dancing lifestyle, and interestingly enough in doing research for it by attending a class (yes, I did) and watching instructional videos on YouTube I discovered that there’s a lot of effort involved and that it’s not easy to do, requires skill and is an actual sport. I believe because of the music, costumes and environment makes for a more sexual atmosphere, but remove those elements and place a girl in a gymnasium wearing a leotard doing the same type of routing I don’t believe you’ll have the same effect. If given the right enviornment and family friendly music and decent clothing, I actually can see it as an Olympic sport one day.

If you could have dinner with three authors to talk with about their writing , living or deceased , who would you invite and why?

I would love to have dinner with Tyler Perry (yes, He authored a Madear book before so he counts 🙂 Joyce Meyer and Jerry Jenkins.

Tyler Perry is my inspiration and has been since his first movie (I’ll admit I didn’t start attending his plays until recently) and I would ask him how in the world does he find time to write movies, plays, t.v. shows along with their accompanying songs etc. I love how he doesn’t keep himself in a box but still respects his core audience by not going to far left to the left.

I would talk to Joyce Meyer about her relationship with God and how she maintains such a calm, peaceful and humble demeanor while heading a largely successful ministry that blesses at the same time and I’ll also ask her about her philanthropic efforts in feeding and providing water for others in other countries. I love her spirit and her words are anointed and I would just enjoy gleaning from what she has to say.

I would ask Jerry Jenkins about the success of his “Left Behind” books and how he got to where he is today since millions have been blessed by his books.

What is the toughest test you faced as a writer or in your profession and how did you overcome the problem?

The toughest test I faced in in not taking things personally. I had to learn that not everyone will agree with your work or endorse it and I had to learn that everyone is entitled to their opinion. I had to trust God that He would have the right people be blessed by my work and the right people to come along and support what I’m doing. Now, when my new book, She That Findeth, released I checked the Amazon reviews actually looking for a 1 star rating because I wanted to get the feedback and learn how I can improve. To my pleasant surprise so far all reviewers have given it 5 stars and many women commented on how they can relate to one or more characters and how they were encouraged in their walk with Christ as a result of reading it. To God be the Glory!

About the Book

sheThatFindeth

Ten years of believing, yet still no husband in sight for Shenita Love. The Bible does say “Wait on the Lord,” which, for Shenita, means waiting for God to deliver her a soul mate. Then again, God helps those who help themselves.

On her thirty-fifth birthday, Shenita’s fear of never starting a family has reached a fever pitch. Her trusty “rule book”—filled with guidelines for dating—simply isn’t cutting it. Soon Shenita is signing up for online dating sites, hitting on men at sporting events, and putting herself out there in ways she never imagined.

When Shenita stops playing by the book and takes matters into her own hands, she finds anything can happen.

Meanwhile, her closest friends are struggling with their own issues of sexuality, acceptance, divorce, insecurity, and financial strain. Always the faithful shoulder to lean on, Shenita wants to be there for them, but her desire to find a man leads her to an unforeseeable circumstance. A place where she must examine her relationship with God and reconsider her priorities.

Book Review by Linda Fegins

How many of you had said to yourself, “God helps those who help themselves” and taken a matter into your own hands? You don’t have to raise your hand, but you will love the chief character Shenita Love in Kim Brooks’ novel She That Findeth . Shenita turns 35 and decides she has waited on the Lord too long and must find the right man her way.

Minister Kim Brooks is a prolific writer who entertains you, while at the same time she engages you in learning a life lesson or examining your faith and relationship with the Lord. You can relate to her well developed characters who face real and tough issues. The story gripped my interest from the beginning to the end. Kim’s story telling is captivating.

Kim raises a very real issue in Christendom about how do you trust God while waiting for a mate or for any situation in which you have been waiting for an answer. A fun read, this book will serve as a wonderful discussion and topic study for the women’s ministry or just among friends, men and women. She That Findeth is a wonderful book.

Her Hearts Desire Media Tour with Author Lisa Watson

LisaWatson-Campaign

Lisa Watson Answers Linda Fegins’ Questions About Her Book and Her Writing Journey

What would you like readers to take away from your book?

– I’d like readers to read Her Heart’s Desire and see that your life and relationships are yours to mold and shape in a way to makes you happy, and contributes to your life in a positive way. When you find someone that centers you, and compliments who you are…hang on to them. Don’t be afraid to do the work. Life isn’t cookie cutter, and neither are people.

What inspired you to write this book?

I was fascinated by Norma Jean’s character. Here’s this matchmaking mother that would do anything to ensure that her only son finds the type of happiness she’s found with his father. The thing is she doesn’t stop there. That single-minded purpose extends to his friends, too and before long, “The Love Broker” has several of Adrian’s friends in her sights. They think she’s horrible at match making…but is she?

What is your favorite chapter from the book and why? –

My favorite chapter would have to be the black hole moment. When Tiffany and Ivan are presented with an obstacle that seems insurmountable. Tiffany’s past experiences with on love, life, and how she views the man in her life present challenges for Ivan. How he handles things within their relationship is also based on what he’s used to doing, and are ingrained in him. Sometimes the combination of the two makes for a bumpy road for the couple.

What did you hope to accomplish with this book?

I wanted readers to be able to connect, and root for the relationships in The Match Broker series; Love Contract and Her Heart’s Desire. Like all of us, these are real-life people. Have you ever had a family member that considered themselves a match maker and wouldn’t take no for an answer? Fears about life, problems with work, or dating and relationship dilemmas? We all do, and I wanted my characters to be no different. I believe that love, open communication and respect for your significant other can get you on the road to happiness…that doesn’t always mean it’s a smooth trip, and without its share of bumps along the way.

What are three things you wish you’d known before you reached where you are now?

1. How important it is that the person representing you as your agent, editor, or publisher is a great fit for you. Are they as passionate about your work as you are? Will they work hard, and represent you in the best possible way? Spend time, do the research and find that perfect fit. It may save you a lot of time, and effort later if they relationship isn’t all you expected.
2. The importance of great marketing for your book, and the time involved as a new author publicizing yourself, and your works. It’s very essential, and some publishers may not provide you with promotional materials. If not, it’s up to you as the author to do what it takes to get your name out there and promote yourself and your brand.
3. Don’t be afraid to follow your dream. If it’s to be a writer…or if it’s another career…move mountains to accomplish what’s in your heart. Don’t let others dissuade you from at least trying to do what makes your soul happy. You have an inner voice for a reason—listen to it.

Oprah always asks, What do you know for sure?

– I know that writing isn’t all glamour, it takes a great deal of hard work, dedication, passion and faith. You will get rejected, we don’t all start out getting phenomenal advances, and bestseller status. For most it’s a long road, and you’ll need a strong back bone for the times those reviews are less than favorable, and it’s scary sharing your innermost thoughts with the world…but for me, knowing that I am using my God given talents is an indescribable joy. Receiving those unexpected emails from readers offering support and excitement for my work…weaving a tale from my imagination, and then seeing it in print, and knowing that my words have touched even one person’s life and made them smile and feel better…inspires me to keep going and never look back.

If you could have dinner with three authors to talk with about their writing, living or deceased, who would you invite and why?

– Maya Angelou. She is such an inspirational woman. For me, her words are soul stirring and compel you to do better than your best. Ms. Angelou is doing exactly what she was born to do, and that’s phenomenal. Leslie Esdaile Banks. She was such a wonderful person. When I first met her at a writer’s convention, I was awe struck. Here was this bestselling, famous author, and she was chatting with me like we had been friends for decades. She was a beautiful soul, and would always offer me pearls of wisdom and sage advice on lessons learned, how to make it in such a competitive business, and how not to get caught up in the hype. I miss her terribly, but I’m so grateful that she and I crossed paths. I would love to have chatted with Jane Austen, too. I enjoy reading historical novels, and her heroines were strong, ahead of their time, and were not content to sit and let life pass them by. I’m sure she would have fascinating tales to tell in person.

How do you find time to connect with God?

– I truly have to stop and listen. I multi-task a lot, but that doesn’t always assure that I get things accomplished. There was one time when I was on deadline worrying over a part of my manuscript, stressing over my full-time job pressures, family life and wishing there were more hours in the day. I have the habit of worrying over everything all at once. This was one of those times, and meltdown was imminent. Suddenly, the words “Be Still,” popped into my head. Immediately I stopped, and did just that. I felt an overwhelming calm that came from sitting there, being quiet, and not thinking about anything but that. That was God’s wake up call for me, and I listened. Since then, I find the time to unplug and just Be Still. I pray more, read more, and focus on the things that matter, like trying to grow spiritually and do the things that I was put on Earth to do. I don’t major on the minutia nearly as much. I’m far from perfect at it, but I am a work in progress.

BeJeweled Online Tour With Chelle Ramsey

ChelleRamsey-Campaign

Chelle Ramsey Answers Linda Fegins’ Questions About Her Book and Her Journey

Tell us about your current book?

BeJeweled is the first novel in a four book series. Each story focuses on the main character: Olivia, the salon owner; and one of her stylists, nail techs, or masseuses. There are other background characters that you get to know, who will have their own story.

michelleramsey_bejewelled_hr

BeJeweled: The Flight of an Angel focuses on Olivia and Angel Franklin, a hard working stylist with dreams of owning her own salon. However, with being berated by another co-worker, constantly finding herself in the center of BeJeweled’s gossip, and her husband’s constant infidelity, she’s losing hope quickly. With years of looking the other way, she realizes that she can no longer ignore his “side chicks” when it hits close to home. Angel may have to make a decision that may leave her raising their only son alone.

Olivia is working on opening a second salon, but when things in the shop spiral out of control, she finds herself being torn in several different directions. A spiritual woman, Olivia attempts to inspire her workers to rise above their adversities. Yet, her attention is diverted when the only man she has ever loved returns to Atlanta. Questioning his return, the status of his marriage, and his intentions, Olivia finds herself once again laying her heart on the line. With the possibility of finally discovering love, she realizes an old promise she made will be tested. Between the drama in the shop, and her own drama surfacing, Olivia finds her faith tested.

Oprah always asks, “What do you know for sure?”

That I am finally where I belong. I have a sense of fulfillment and walking in my purpose when I write. There are many life challenges that we all must face. Our attitude determines how we come out on the other side of that obstacle, if we come out at all. When you give your absolute best to a situation, you will have peace at the end knowing that you gave it your all.

What is the toughest test you faced as a writer or in your profession and how did you overcome the problem?

Marketing my work. This is a work in progress, because I enjoy writing not necessarily the promotional aspects of it. Initially I am an introvert, who is learning to come out of her shell. As I continue to grow in this world, I am learning to make the connections, build the relationships, and do the work. I believe having belief in my abilities, putting in the hard work, and having faith, I will reach my goals.

What is something readers would be surprised you do?

Have a big whine fest before every great challenge. This occurs in the process of designing book covers, as well as certain routes I want to take in terms of content of the book. I actually begin a squabble with my husband over something silly about the process and somehow it brings the best of both of us together, and then we get the best out of my books. I can be a big baby during the process, despite the fact that the other side of me is very inspirational and grounded. Laughing out loud!

Can you give us one do and one don’t for those aspiring to be a writer?

Do your research in determining which routes you want to take in this area of your career, to prepare yourself for the journey. You want to be as knowledgeable and educated as possible on the journey, despite the fact that you will make mistakes.

Don’t allow others to dictate how and what you write. If you do, you will later realize that you have not been true to yourself on the journey at all.

How can writers get in contact with you?

About The Author

An avid reader since her primary years, Chelle saw books as an escape mechanism. Excited by the worlds, and characters that could be created with a touch of the imagination, she began writing her own stories at the age of 12. The more enamored with storytelling she became, the more she wanted to create stories about the suffering, and hardships she saw others enduring, with one twist…her characters would rise above their adversities and limitations, but not always with traditional endings.
This busy wife, and mother of three, exchanged her Girl Scout Leader pins for her creative writing pen, as she began to focus on publishing her novels. In her spare time, when she isn’t writing, she enjoys reading mystery novels, watching the NBA, remodeling their home with her husband, and spending time with him and their children. Having received her MBA in Human Resource Management, she says she cannot wait for the day when writing becomes her full-time career. “If I can show my readers they are not alone, in dealing with their challenges, and that they can rise above their limitations, I have achieved my goal,” Ramsey says.

After nearly eight years of deciding to put a single ballpoint pen to a piece of paper he finally finished placing the last period at the end of the last sentence and introduced readers to Where We Left Off, a story that has evolved into something to this day he will say he never expected and in some cases transcending the definition of its genre.

Alex currently resides in Bear, Delaware with his wife and his two children where they share a small home just right for him to sneak off into a little corner and write more of what he loves and where he is currently at work on his next novel. He is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Nu Upsilon Chapter in Wilmington, Delaware, a father and a husband. Alex loves to tell a good story, but more than that he loves to make you feel as if you are right there as it’s happening.

In the wake of a tragic accident she finds what she thought she knew was only the beginning, and what happens from there leaves them both searching for answers to a single question in what turns out to be a startling outcome. Where We Left Off.

Comment
I enjoyed this book ! The characters were interesting, real and vibrant. I love the theme of forgiveness and healing from betrayal and feeling abandoned by those who should protect you. While there are some areas that could have been improved upon, this story was a refreshing romance with unexpected twists and turns. This is a story of devotion, pain, being blinded with unforgiveness and hope. A great love story of how God can work all things together for our good. I look forward to the sequel.

Practical Advice for Writers

Practical Advice for Beginning Fiction (or other genre) Writers

If I could give any advice to beginning fiction writers I would say this: Just write. One of the biggest mistakes we make a freshman authors is that we are overwhelmingly seduced by the ideas that we are not enough, that we don’t know as much, or can write as good as those appearing on New York Times, and National Best Seller Lists. We are …you are just as good if not better. What you write is about you and your story, your characters and your plots be it fiction or otherwise. Regardless of how much you may think or hear that “we’ve heard this story or we’ve seen his before”, YOUR story hasn’t been told until YOU tell it.

Another piece of advice I would give you is not to rush. When I finished my novel I was ready to publish it and make it ready for the world. I was so happy to place that last period at the end of the sentence until I was willing to overlook the editing process. A friend of mine said to me “this is your first book, and what you put out whether it’s good or bad will determine the level of expectation readers place on you and your next novel. You can put it out without being edited and risk that being your first impression or you can be patient send it to be edited and release it when you are happy with the results. Either way it’s your choice”. From there I actually did a few things. I established a focus group to first read my novel completely unedited just to get their unbiased views and opinions. From that I was able to revise, take away add to etc. After that I submitted to have it edited which helped me to see a lot more. So long advice short, I would say (1) Be confident in your decision to write. (2) Don’t rush progress. (3) Find a trusted and unbiased focus group of friends and family to read your novel. (4) Remember, first impressions are everything.

The Shift by Melissa Ann Ricks Virtual Book Tours

book_cover

About The Book

There is a sense of urgency in the atmosphere as God is transitioning what the world has deemed impossible and unbelievable into the possible and the believable. Don’t be alarmed by the “sudden” moves of God.
Pastor Douglass and his family have been positioned for such a move but because of the dense fog of deception that seems to surround them, some in the Douglass family have created their own beliefs, fabricating their own sense of self; negating the truth, God’s truth, even when truth is staring them in the face. They, like many, are living lives devoid of the knowledge of who they really are and robbing themselves and those they love of their true identity and freedom. Deeply embedded lies from enemy have blinded eyes, impaired hearing and hardened hearts and Angels from the army of God have been deployed. The assignment: the execution of God’s divine design. Dreams, supernatural revelation and actual attacks from man’s ultimate foe will expose all and confirm God’s plan for Xion, Veronica, Zeborah, Bo and Pastor Douglas. Can they handle the truth and surrender? Will the infrastructure of unbelief crumble? The lives of the Douglass family will never be the same and neither will you, because of THE SHIFT !

She is the author Awesome Wonder: The Gift of Remembrance, The Son and THE BLOOD DONE SIGNED MY NAME.

Book Review by Linda Fegins

Author Melissa Ricks’ awesome and life changing story ,THE SHIFT, is a dynamic ,engaging story that unapologetically is Biblically based, and firmly, yet lovingly points you to follow the ways of Jesus Christ and to lay aside every weight and sin. It is powerful, yet not preachy or doctrinal. It is a story of unconditional love, faith, forgiveness and knowing who you are in Christ. The story and life like characters were engrossing. We observe the spiritual battleground between the Holy Spirit and the enemy who goes around attempting to keep the characters bound to negative lifestyles and in a state of feeling unloved and stuck by using lies, secrets, discouragement, shame, and feelings of self-hatred. We see how the truth of God’s Word, love and prayer works in the lives of people to lead them to Jesus and freeing them of the bondage that has held them captive for years. The story addresses issues that people and the church skirt around.

This was an awesome story of faith and unconditional love with a touch of romance. Ricks powerfully and effectively used the characters to demonstrate how powerful and necessary prayer is and how God responds when we pray sincerely. I loved this story. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and cannot wait to recommend THE SHIFT to my book club.

How do you find time to connect with God?
Life is most certainly busy for all of us but I have come to realize that I must make time with God a priority. Spending time with Him is a necessity especially for those of us who need to hear from Him to write effectively. Sometimes, I simply sit on the side of my bed and just tell Him how wonderful He is! I thank Him for His protection and the protection over my family. Should mornings not be opportune, I take long showers. I know it seems crazy but I simply stand in the shower. I talk to him briefly, am then quiet immersing myself in the water and His presence and just listen. Time to connect with God is of the essence!

What inspired you to write this book?

So many are believing the lies of the enemy. Although stating that they are Christians, many are still in bondage. They have yet to be delivered from fear, shame, guilt and even rebellion. Jesus is waiting. He hasn’t forgotten about us regardless of how far we’ve strayed and His love is unending. He is an EVER present in the times of our greatest challenge. Hearts have been broken and even hardened as a result of the enemy’s lies. It’s time for the eyes and hearts of the hurt and confused to be opened so that they can truly experience the freedom and power that being a true and unapologetic follower of Christ affords. We need to pray, act and believe that the eyes and hearts of the hurt and confused to be opened so that people can truly experience the freedom and power that being a true and unapologetic follower of Christ affords.

Who are your favorite authors and why?? Favorite books?

J. California Cooper is one of my favorite authors. She is a master storyteller and a writer that succeeds in making the reader an active participant in her stories .The Wake of the Wind written by Ms. Cooper is one of my all time favorite novels. Michele Andrea Bowen is my unofficial literary mentor. I love her and her books as she isn’t afraid of sharing the truth of God’s word! She is a bold sister in Christ! Her approachability, honesty and imagination is a blessing! (Church Folk and Holy Ghost Corner) Frank Peretti is also one of my favorite authors as he truly has the gift to share with his reader what is transpiring in the supernatural. His books have blessed me as they have provided much spiritual insight. (The Oath, Piercing the Darkness)

Tell us about your journey to publication.

Inwardly, I knew that I was not destined to be a “corporate woman” and when my position was eliminated, I had inkling that it was God-ordained, at least for me. Years prior to this event, I’d resolved to reconnect with the Master and sought to draw nigh to Him. I don’t think I would have been able to really hear God if I hadn’t been reconnected to Him. “Tell the world about Me with the words I will give you,” is what I heard. Believing that God would give me the words, I began to write my first book; Awesome Wonder: The Gift of Remembrance. My husband said something that enables me to write with confidence; “If God told you to write, then write, and stand on His promises.” I’m so excited and honored to be used by God to spread His message with the stories that I create. I will continue to do so for as long as He provides me with the stories and the words that will draw all men to Him.

Tell us about your current book?

I’ll let the synopsis peak your interest… There is a sense of urgency in the atmosphere as God is transitioning what the world has deemed impossible and unbelievable into the possible and the believable. Pastor Douglass and his family have been chosen for such a supernatural transition but because of the dense fog of deception that seems to surround them, some in the Douglass family have created their own beliefs, fabricating their own sense of self; negating the truth, God’s truth, even when truth is staring them in the face. They, like many, are living lives devoid of the knowledge of who they really are and robbing themselves and those they love of their true identity and freedom. Deeply embedded lies from enemy have blinded eyes, impaired hearing and hardened hearts and Angels from the army of God have been deployed. Dreams, supernatural revelation and actual attacks from man’s ultimate foe will expose all and confirm God’s plan for Xion, Veronica, Zeborah, Bo and Pastor Douglas. Can they handle the truth and surrender? The lives of the Douglass family will never be the same and neither will you, because of THE SHIFT!”

How did you come up with ideas for this book?

Honestly, as I began to write THE SHIFT, the ideas just started flowing. I’ve always wanted to incorporate the truth of the supernatural into my writing. I want people to see past what they can physically visualize in the “natural”. Knowing that there is underlying spiritual aspect to everything that one may encounter is essential. Believe it or not, I had a totally different premise…. But GOD! He knows what He’s doing and I’m learning to be obedient.  There’s nothing like the HOLY SPIRIT! Each idea for THE SHIFT was a divine whisper.

What valuable lessons do you want readers to learn from your book?

We have the awesome opportunity to be everything God says we are because of Jesus’ unstoppable and unshakable affection towards us. He can fastrack, (hence, THE SHIFT) our lives into ones of true purpose. Lives that will give Him glory! All He desires is a YES!

When did you begin to realize you wanted to write?

I have always enjoyed and had an interest in the art of writing. It was a “hidden love” for many years. Not until the pregnancy of my eldest son did I feel a need to unearth my hidden love and write. When I resolved to reconnect with the Master and sought to draw nigh to Him, did the desire to write become stronger and strangely, to my surprise, an urgent need. I realized that this could be my way of bringing souls into the Kingdom of God. Writing and inserting the word of God can in many cases transport you into the presence of God and that’s what I would love to share with all who read my stories.

SO HE HURT YOU NOW WHAT? by Nicole Cleveland

book_cover

About The Book

So He Hurt You, Now What? – Messages of Hope for a Hurting Sister is a series of short messages to encourage, uplift and inspire you. Think of a daily message you would send a friend that’s at a very low place in their life. Her husband or boyfriend just left her or she just found out of his betrayal. She’s in shock and kinda frozen….unable to move forward.
We need a voice in our ear that says… Hey Girl – You are going to make it… You are NOT alone… Let me help you get out of this pit you are currently in because you can’t stay there.

In the midst of our storm or “pity party” we need someone that’s not gonna play with us. Somebody that has no other motive but to see us be happy.

That is what you’ll get from – So He Hurt You, Now What? – Messages of Hope for a Hurting Sister

She has helped thousands of women extract purpose from the pain they’ve endured. She has a heart for those on the verge of giving up, like she once was. Her ministry and personal mission is to ensure people are not suffering in silence.

In 2010 she released her debut book, “So He Cheated, Now What?”, her personal testimony of overcoming an affair in her marriage; an affair that produced a child.
God is the steady rock that stays consistent in her life. Without God, nothing she does would be possible.

People are on the verge of giving up and they need to understand how to make it.

How do you find time to connect with God?
I connect with God through prayer and reading the word of God on a daily basis.

What inspired you to write this book?
After writing my first book women would contact me about being hurt. Some from infidelity but many just from being hurt. Pain is pain. I would minister to these women via the phone and made sure I took time with them. Sometimes all we need is a listening ear and an encouraging word. That’s why I wrote this book. I wrote it to encourage my sisters.

Who are your favorite authors and why?? Favorite books?
Vanessa Miller, Kendra Norman, Joyce Meyer, Bishop T.D. Jakes
I have many favorite books. The Rain Series by Vanessa Miller is one of my favorites.

Tell us about your journey to publication.
I always knew I would write a book. I just didn’t know what type of book.
Writing has always been therapy to me. I took pen to paper to share my story to help others.

Tell us about your current book?
“So He Hurt You Now What?” is the follow up to my first book. Many people go through various types of “hurts “in their relationship and it’s not just from infidelity. Pain is pain regardless of how it was inflicted.
“So He Hurt You Now What?” speaks to that woman that’s in shock over the hurt or the betrayal. They are stuck and not sure which way to go. This book says, “Ok, they hurt you, let’s deal with the hurt but let’s continue to live your life. We need you”

How did you come up with ideas for this book?
The messages are messages I would have wanted to hear in the midst of my storm. The book ministered to me, even while writing. I lost my mother in the midst of completing this book and the words, scriptures and prayers blessed me during some difficult days.

What valuable lessons do you want readers to learn from your book?
“Yes, they may have hurt you and they may have even left you. But that is not the end of you. We need you to get yourself together and live. “

Sneak Peak
Chapter Ten

“Okay, let’s hit that once more from the top,” directed one very perfection-driven recording engineer. Enoch “Z-man” Zimmerman is, by far, the most on-point dude I know; nothing gets by him—musically speaking—and if his name is attached to it, so is excellence. If I hadn’t known this about him beforehand, I would’ve ended this session an hour ago. Old dude is dipping into my pockets—deep. But, it’s all good. There’s no price tag on quality or knowing that your creative vision is being birthed and we did cover a lot of ground in these last two days. However, I was trying to come in under a budget since I still have to get updated headshots and that, alone, can cost a mint. Needless to say, the budget needs a budget.

From within the encapsulated sound booth, I quickly prepare myself for a retake by clearing my throat and rolling my head to work out neck and shoulder tension. This is the last track we’re recording, also my favorite, and I can’t risk anything getting in the way of my sound. I’ve reworked the lyrics and rearranged the music to Will Downing’s All About You and in a play on words, I decided to use the working title, All About Him, for my CD. Z-man, who was previously in a zone setting the levels on the control panel, gives me his ‘look,’ the one that says, any minute now…waiting on you.

Closing my eyes, I ease into the moment by thinking of the unending blessings God has poured into my life, most recently the love and devotion of a woman who loves Him as much as I do. I give Z-man a thumbs up, our non-verbal cue that I’m ready to record. Through my headphones, I hear the music intro and seconds later, Z-man‘s voice comes through in a word, “Rolling.”
Swaying side to side, I’m feeling it and without forethought, I take ownership of the musical moment and sing, “I’m not a perfect man, I do the best I can…”

Inside of four minutes, Z-man shouts, “Perfect!” and just like that we’re done. Demo complete, mission accomplished. Talk about feeling good … man!
Collecting my sheet music from the copy stand, I give the booth the once-over and scan the small space for other belongings I might have overlooked. As if handling a Ming vase, I carefully place the headphones on the overhead hang. Lord knows the last thing I need now is to have Z-man add something else to my currently swollen studio tab.

“You know, O.C., I believe your voice has gotten much stronger. Not at all like when I first recorded you a few years back. You’ve got a more mature sound.”
Beaming with pride, “Man, a lot has gotten stronger and better with me.” I strike an impressive bodybuilder crab pose, careful not to flash the shiny new article of jewelry that now resides on the ring finger of my left land. We both laugh and post up a high-five on it.

“Oh, I know that look. Had it once upon a time myself,” Z-man reflects. “That’s the look of a man who’s found his better half. Congrats again, man. I wish you the best.” His voice fades as though he’s been a casualty of love. And while his wound may still be fresh, he is no love reject; he’s recovering from the death of his wife earlier this year.

“Thanks, Z,” I respond. Placing a sympathetic hand on his shoulder which serves as a point of contact as well, I whisper a brief prayer for his healing. “That means a lot, man.”
“I miss her, O.C.” his voice slightly cracking, “I miss her a lot.” Z-man’s body slowly slumps in his chair, his eyes misting despite his best efforts to blink back the tears.
Identifying with his pain in the presence of my own joy is a real challenge, but I do my best to console him anyway.

“You and Maggie…watching the two of you was…was…well, inspiring. Y’all were so in sync. I’ve never seen anything like it except for my Mom and Pops, of course.” Although I did my best to encourage Z-man, Goddess is the pro at this kind of thing since she deals with death and sorrow every day for a living.
I watch as a nostalgic smile sweeps across Z-man’s face. I must’ve said something right. Unfolding his grief-tormented body, he sits straight up and releases a fraction of his pain through a loud exhale, “Remember this…if this were your last day on earth, what would you look at more closely, more intensely? What would you appreciate? What would you want to savor? What would really be important to you?” He pauses and appears to be thinking about his next words.

Jagged Edges Virtual Book Tour with Doris H. Dancy

book_cover

About The Book
Derek Wellington had his life set. He was born into wealth, graduated with honors from Harvard Law, and, since high school, knew he would marry the beautiful Morgan LaRue. …but somewhere along the way, everything he thought he knew about himself, about Morgan, and even about life itself will boggle his mind, and catapult him into a world of betrayal, deception, and confusion. Somewhere in this darkness, he must search for The Light to find his way out of a maze that, if he fails, will destroy his heart and soul forever.
Praise for Jagged Edges
“Jagged Edges is definitely an easy reader and page turner.”
“From the prologue to the last chapter, Doris grabbed my heart, mind, and soul with her masterful storytelling”

Meet the Author

Doris H. Dancy is an accomplished and award-winning educator, speaker, writing consultant, playwright, wife, mother and now author. Her life’s focus has been educating our youth in an appreciation of both the written and spoken word. She received her BA Degree in English from North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina and began a teaching career in both English and Spanish. She was graduated from Hampton University with a MA in English Education and eventually became Chairperson of the English Department, English Teacher Specialist, and later Curriculum Leader of English K-12 for Hampton City Public Schools. Teaching and supervising were both rewarding careers, and each taught her a different level and focus of professionalism and commitment. As the Curriculum Leader, along with many other responsibilities, she developed and provided staff development for a writing program that guaranteed student achievement.

Book Review:

Author Dorothy Dancy masterfully unfolds an enchanting and challenging love story full of twists and turns about betrayal, trust, forgiveness and friendships. This novel is an easy page turner and the writing is elegant, yet pure and full of grace and power. I love how she shares the hearts and minds of the characters. The story and the characters caused me to think about relationships and how do we forget the past , forgive and maintain trust. While Derek may have been every woman’s dream, it was something about him I did not like. That is the beauty of the book , the characters where believable and the issues relevant to challenge us spiritually without being preachy, that this story would be useful in teaching a class on forgiveness and trust. A good romantic story with real issues that is spiritually uplifting makes Jagged Edges a wonderful book to read.

Interview Questions for Author Dancy by Linda Fegins

1. What would you like readers to take away from your book?

Jagged Edges, a Christian romance, attempts to show the agony of betrayal. I want readers to take away the idea that when you betray someone, even if or when there is forgiveness for your careless acts, you can never put this relationship back to its original place of trust. That place is destroyed for a lifetime. Without trust, it is virtually impossible to have complete love, and the relationship may constantly seem to teeter on the edge of destruction. I want my readers to see that “one moment of betrayal leaves so much torn.”

2. What inspired you to write this book?
The simple and most honest answer to this question is one word: God. The more thorough answer is that the inspiration came as a result of my becoming acutely cognizant of the hurt and pain of so many people in broken relationships. It is devastating seeing their lives in turmoil simply because of betrayal, and how impossible it seems to mend these broken places. As I prayed for them, God opened a door for me to render something to glorify Him, and, at the same time, help others see how important it is to really love each other. Jagged Edges is completely dedicated to Christ and provides another way for Him to proclaim the words of I Corinthians 13.

3. What is your favorite chapter from the book and why?
My favorite chapter is chapter 8 “A Secret Place.” When Arianna leaves Paris, she is basically a lost soul. She has lost herself, and more importantly, she has lost her connection with Christ. When she stumbles upon this secret place, she is surrounded by all things natural … things created by God. In this secluded and beautiful place, she reconnects with God, and in Chapter 8 she brings Derek there to show him that “life pays benefits when we take the time to honor it.” He wants to rush into a sexual relationship with someone he barely knows, and in this place surrounded by God’s infinitesimal love, she shows him how important it is to be patient and wait for TRUE LOVE….a love that will bring great joy and satisfaction. Her message to him in this chapter is that with time and attention we grow in love, and we should avoid distractions by infatuation and sheer lust.

4. Oprah always asks, “What do you know for sure?”
There is not a great deal in life that we can know for sure; however, there are a few things we can know. One of those things is that love takes time and care. It is nothing that can be rushed. It requires patience. Infatuation and lust have a very short time span and when a relationship is based solely on those two things, it is destined to fail. That is something I know for sure.

5. Describe yourself to our visitors.
I am an accomplished and award winning educator and speaker. Additionally, I am a writing consultant, playwright, wife, mother and now novelist. My life’s focus has been educating our youth in an appreciation of both the written and spoken word.
Growing up in Raleigh, North Carolina was a joy. My parents provided me with so many fantastic opportunities like eight years of private school, piano lessons that started at the age of five, chances to visit large libraries, trips to the movies with my Mom and brother, travel experiences, a church that made sure I understood my faith, and parents and a grandmother who paid attention to everything that would help me forge a path to a successful life.
I cannot remember a time when I was not enthralled with reading a story or telling one. I can recall in my childhood, making up stories and telling them first to my eagerly awaiting dolls attentive to every word, then the neighborhood kids listening and laughing sitting under the big apple tree in my grandma’s backyard. During my teen years and college days, I found comfort in writing poetry and plays. As an English teacher, all grown up with the experience of reading, analyzing, and devouring the magic of a multiplicity of stories, I taught many of my students to love the literary word and find the secrets of the hidden meanings that unlock the appreciation of literature. Now, I have actualized the long awaited dream of penning my first novel, and it is my hope that you delight in meeting my new characters, walking in their shoes, laughing with them, crying with them, and ultimately seeing your own world through their eyes.
Throughout my life, I have found many favorable outcomes in a variety of endeavors. One of my greatest rewards has been seeing the tremendous success of so many of her students, and I have received numerous awards for excellence in educating. Two of which were The Virginia Outstanding Teacher of English and The National Award for Building Successful Readers.
Presently I live in Virginia with her husband, who is my very best friend. We have been blessed with two beautiful daughters, two talented sons-in-law, and three fantastic granddaughters. They all continue to support me as I complete Jagged Edges and begin its sequel.

6. How do you find time to connect with God?
It is hard for me to think of not finding time to connect with MY GREATEST FRIEND. We are in constant contact. There is nothing that I do where I don’t seek Him first. He is beside me daily. He is an essential part of my life so He is always present. I don’t have to “find time for Him” because He is a constant. I study His Word often, and sometimes telephonically when I talk with my friends; sometimes we are just talking about Him and all of the blessings that He provides daily. I go to church sometimes more that just for Sunday service, and some days, I go out in my backyard and pray among His creations. Too often, we spend our time caught up in worldly business, and forget that without God, things for us might be extremely different. As I go from place to place in my car, I listen to His music and pray for traveling mercy and His blessing throughout my day. At the close of a day, I sit and thank Him for His Mercy and Grace provided during the day. When my children were small, I read Bible stories to them, or sang a Godly song to them as I gave them their nightly baths. There is plenty time to connect with God if we would make Him our focus as He makes us His. In chapter 8 of Jagged Edges, I try very hard to make

~A Prologue~~The breaking of dawn is the best keeper of secrets I know; it has a pact with the close of day. At sun’s first peek, the confidence is safe, and one has no evidence at all how altered life might be by eventide~

The library at the university is quiet except for multiple pages turning and a stupid unnecessary clock facing me. I might just waste a star wish to get that annoying thing smashed. I’d do it myself, but I’d get caught, and be a greater disappointment to my parents than Ruff who still can’t sit up, roll over, or even bark like a real dog. I sigh. Deal with the clock, Arianna. You’re twenty-four years old, already have your MBA in Fashion Management and Entrepreneurship and almost ready to start your own Fashion House for goodness sakes. All you have to do is complete this little research, and you’re on your own. You’re not five. Anyway, you have far more important things to think about at 8:15 on this lonely Friday night, like how to meet that gorgeous guy sitting at the table across from you.

I sit back in my chair and just stare at him, counting how many times he glances up and quickly looks back at his work. He is doing a very poor job of pretending he hasn’t noticed that I’m staring at him. He’s on his eighth under eyed glance at me when he puts his laptop down, folds his hands, sits back, looks straight at me with a smirk, and holds the stare. I smile what I think is my very best smile. Let the games begin! After a minute and a half of staring, I’m just getting comfortable, and there is no way I’m giving up. He begins packing up his things slowly. Still staring, never glancing down to see what he’s doing, he meticulously places his laptop in his black leather attaché case. I can tell he is purposefully taking his time, and for some strange reason, his deliberate movements, to me, are extremely sensual. I almost have to break my stare when I think to myself: any man that sexy ought to be locked up and the key thrown away. He leaves his case on the table, returns two books to a nearby shelf all the while looking into my staring eyes, and then he brings his fine self over to me.

He pulls out the chair that faces me without saying a word, turns it backwards, and tries to stifle his grin from becoming a full face all teeth showing spectacle. Of course, he’s far too cool for that.
“OK, you’ve been staring at me for the last ten minutes so I thought I would just come over and ask if I have spinach in my teeth or a booger up my nose.” I laugh. He smiles.
“What if I say both?” I grin, cupping my hand under my chin and looking directly into his brown bedroom eyes.
“Well, I’ll know that’s not true,” he taunts matter-of-factly.
“And how would you know that?” I question cynically. This man is about to make my heart jump out of my body.
“Simple.” “Simple?” “Yeah, simple. It’s a trick question.” He rocks back in the chair. “I didn’t have
spinach today.” We both laugh as quietly as we can since we are somewhat aware that we are in a library, and there are a few people still pretending to study on a Friday night.
“Well, to be quite honest with you, umm…Peter? Ah…Paul?” I lift one eyebrow and continue. “…Mary?” He gives me a closed mouth smile, and plays around his mouth with his thumb and index finger.
“Well, definitely not Mary. Derek. Derek Wellington.” For the first time in my life I hear the sexiness in that baritone voice of his that will drive me insane for years to come.
“Well, to be quite honest with you…Derek, Derek Wellington, your hair caught my attention.
“My hair?” I bite my bottom lip to cover my grin, and nod my head yes. “Yes, your hair…and
definitely your eyes too,” I say with mocked seriousness… “and then there’s that mouth,” I giggle.
“Oh, is that good or bad?” he chuckles. “Oh, that’s real good,” I admit with a flirtatious grin. “Good. Good,” he nods in mock approval. “So, you… this beautiful woman sitting here toying with me, you are… Gracie?”
“No, not even close,” I laugh.
I opt here for a more serious tone. My hazel eyes, my windows to the soul, touch his. “My name is Arianna…Arianna Channing.”
“Ah, a beautiful name for a lovely lady.” “Well thank you kind sir.” I bat my eyes playfully. “You are quite welcome, my lady.” And then he does something totally unexpected. He reaches across the table, takes my hand in his, and slowly brings it to his beautiful lips. That is how it all started with Attorney Derek Chase Wellington, III and me.
I would say that we had a whirlwind summer romance. We were inseparable. Both of us were taking a break of sorts before starting full force into our careers. Derek had studied for the Bar, passed it, and in September would join a private law firm in Virginia. I had completed my studies in Fashion Management and Entrepreneurship in New York City, and studied an additional two years in Paris. Coincidentally, I was also moving to Virginia, after the summer, to start my own Channing Fashion House, the first one in the Tidewater area.
Our connection, from its inception, has that magic touch…that something special; however, there is this one thing that tears our bond, interferes with our solidarity, and will forever puzzle me. Throughout this disappointment, I am honest with myself. Common sense and life’s experiences have taught me that it will be impossible to know the essence of the truth surrounding a very deep, but damaged, relationship in Derek’s past, but that is not my issue.
From the inception of our brief courtship and after we marry, Derek and I are always completely honest with each other…we trust each other explicitly, or so I am led to believe. That is what makes my discovery so perplexing… so hurtful and a huge issue for me. The mystifying thing, now that the real truth irradiates, is that my friend, my boyfriend, my fiancée, my lover, my husband never mentions Morgan Shay LaRue to me. Not once, that I can remember, does he ever even call her name.
