Network for Success by Pam Perry

Nobody gets to the highest peaks without help from others.

Networking is the identification of relationships for the purpose of sharing information and resources. Taking time for people and communication is the key. Don’t ever get too busy to share information or your wisdom.

Success comes when you hook up with like-minded folks and kindred spirits. Moving ahead often involves reaching out and being willing to give. We reap what we sow.

So, how does one “network” for success?

Here are some practical tips to implement:

  1. Be visible. Dress sharp and snappy. Look like someone others want to know because your image says “success.” Be willing to attend functions alone. Networking expands your circle of influence, builds your personal brand, and garners support.
  2. Give before you get. Sow before you reap. Look for ways to be a blessing. Share information and resources with contacts before asking them for anything. Search for their interests and goals when meeting someone new. Figure out a way to help them.Gather, collect, and distribute info. Position yourself as the “go to” person for ministry information. Provide regular updates about helpful events or books. Use an email database system like active campaign or AWeber to simplify the process and send information attractively.

    3. Write your vision. Make it plain. Make the most of networking opportunities by having eye-catching marketing materials. Have more than a business card when going to a conference or event. Be intentional about your purpose. Have a bookmark or postcard describing your book. Offer a CD or brochure as a speaker.

    4. Demonstrate your sincere faith by being a person of character and integrity. Follow the Golden Rule which says, “Treat others as you want to be treated”, with respect and courtesy. Follow up and follow through. Deliver on your promises.

So be deliberate in creating partnerships, building relationships and keeping friendships. Make it your intent to be kind, really care about people, treat others with respect and value everyone.

A Soldier’s Story Excerpt

Shortly after I turned 18, I enlisted in the army. Around that time, I learned that the young woman I’d been dating was pregnant, so going into the army would be an opportunity to provide for my child. The army sent me to Fort Dix in New Jersey for boot camp training on April 22, 1982. It was the perfect enlistment site for me.

Because of the popular television show, Dallas, I had in mind that I wanted to go to Fort Hood, Texas and meet JR Ewing. Not only did I meet Larry Hagman, the actor who played JR, but I also met the entire cast at one of the big Dallas malls. That was in the 80s when the networks spent money to have cast members show up to greet their fans, and when fans could easily get a photo with the stars. Meeting JR had been on my mental bucket list. Later I learned that “Klinger” from Mash and Danny Thomas were both from Toledo, and so I added them to the list.

In 1983, I re-enlisted and chose Hawaii as my next army stint. There for 18 months, I’m convinced that the Hawaii move helped me look long and hard at myself and my future. In Hawaii, I decided I needed to better myself. I enrolled at the Wahiawa Community School for Adults and got my high school diploma. My mother was so disappointed when I didn’t graduate from high school, so I did it as much for her as for myself.

My long transportation management career began in Wahiawa. I was one of a large number of applicants who applied for a temporary mission of driving for the Sergeant Major for the division. He was the senior enlisted man at the post. I beat out the other candidates for that position. Later, I drove for the one-star general at the post. After that, I returned to my unit and worked as the battalion mail clerk until he left in 1985. While there, I met friends and mentors who would help me decide on my career journey. That same year, I was asked to re-enlist, and First Sergeant Herbert Harris became a lifelong mentor and friend. Sergeant Harris recommended that I choose Fort Eustis in Newport News, Virginia for my re-enlistment. I remained at Fort Eustis from April 1985 until January 1988.

I became a squad leader, and for the next six months, I managed a squad of truck drivers in and around the base. After that, I was set on transportation becoming my specialty, but my career trajectory changed some when I was appointed to head up NCO Training, where I was responsible for the training of 270 soldiers.

Around this time, I met First Sergeant Fletcher Walker. He was sent in to straighten out our company, and he did just that. He would stand up at the top of the stairs with his hat covering his eyes but looking down at us. Sergeant Walker was a ‘soldier among soldiers,’ an airborne paratrooper, a Vietnam Veteran who had been shot three times. There was no one more surprised when he chose me to run the training.

I knew he had high expectations, and I was determined not to disappoint him. He was the kind of leaders for whom soldiers would fight and die. He was a true hero who taught me how to be a soldier and a man. He shared a lot about life with me. I imitated him in many ways so much that everyone would call me “Baby Walker.” I met his family and it was an honor. He retired as a Command Sergeant Major.

Dream Big.Get Started. Do Big.

As we celebrate Black History Month remember -Inventions, financial empowerment, entrepreneurial success, social changes and social justice can be achieved by those of you who make the bold decision to apply your knowledge, your energy and your talent to humanitarian goals. Think of how those we honor today gave to make a difference for others.
If it is encouraging, let him encourage;
if it is contributing to the needs of others,
let him give generously; if it is leadership,
let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully. Romans 12:8 NIV

Success is achieved by those willing to persevere beyond the point where the majority stop and turn back. Today is your day.

God has given you talents, gifts and His Word. Take another step closer to your goal. Hold fast to the hope, the Word, to “doing” your dream if God put it there. (Hebrews 10:35-39)

Just think of the entrepreneur’s influence Madam C.J. Walker.Walker, born Sarah Breedlove in 1867 in Louisiana. She is remembered today as the first black self-made female millionaire in the United States. Through hard work and her witty inventions she amassed her fortune by inventing groundbreaking haircare products for women of color. She also implemented strategic marketing skills .

One of Walker’s best known quotes is “I got my start by giving myself a start.” She was born the child of sharecroppers in Louisiana, and her parents died when she was just 7 years old. She worked as a farm laborer and married her first husband when she was just 14 to leave the dangerous home of her brother-in-law. A widow and single mother to a young daughter at 20, she decided to move to Missouri where she worked for less than $2 a day to afford to get her daughter an education. We can gain many insights from this great entrepreneur

Use the gifts and talents God gave you to bless others and to generate wealth. Dream Big . Pray Big. Then begin to take action to accomplish your dream. Write your goals down using the SMART system (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timeline) and set dates to accomplish the plan. Make the call. Develop a team. Start. Make the call. Write the book.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for the gifts and talents you have provided me. Let me use them to your glory and to bless others.  Let me not grow weary in preparing, in toiling to create the witty invention, to have entrepreneur success and to develop systems that will provide solutions to the needs of human kind. Give me favor and the wisdom and strength to persevere. In the name of Jesus.

Thank God Always

Thank God Always (Days 26-30)

I hope you enjoyed Thanksgiving Day celebration with family and friends. You have much to thank God for. Think about it and then thank the Lord.

God’s command is “In every thing give thanks”; and the command is emphasized by the declaration, “for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you” (1 Thess. 5:18, KJV). It is an actual positive command. If we want to obey God, we have simply got to give thanks in everything. There is no getting around it.

Sometimes we have to Hallelujah anyway! What does that mean? We must believe God is blessing us always, and we must be thankful at all times.  Instead of blaming God and complaining when things go wrong, thank God anyway. Believe that God will turn a tragedy into a triumph. It does not mean you understand the occurrence, don’t hurt and that you don’t cry. It means you will still have a thankful heart and praise the Lord.

O give thanks unto the Lord! Call upon His name; make known his deeds among the people!(1 Chronicle16:8-10) No matter what the circumstance give thanks that you have a prayer hearing God, that has unfamthonable love for and that you are more than a conqueror.

Excerpt for Dead Lions Don’t Roar

A motivating and inspiring book of poetry should always leave the reader with thoughts about personal development and doses of inspiration … and that is exactly what Dead Lions Don’t Roar does. Whilst the poem entitled the name of the collection speaks volumes about using our gifts and talent and finding our own unique roar, there are a number of other poems that share the essence of the book. Here is a sneak peak of one such poem:

If Men were God

There would be no more us,

Long Dead and buried,

Forgotten with the times,

An atonement for our sins

If men were God….

This poem makes us think about what each of our individual role and purpose is in life, which will then motivate us to achieve…our very best. This is the entire purpose of Dead Lion’s Don’t Roar.

About The Book

Dead Dogs Don’t Bark is the second poetry collection from the acclaimed author, Tolu A. Akinyemi. With a similar tone and style to Dead Lions Don’t Roar (Tolu’s first poetry collection) this follow up masterpiece is nothing short of pure motivation. The poems cover a range of topics that many in life are aware of, that the Author himself has experienced and that we all, whatever our age, need support in. Beautifully written, the poems speak volumes to all age groups as they feature finding your inner talent, celebrating your individuality and distinct voice. The poetry collection has didactic elements for evaporating the effects of peer pressure and criminality amongst many others. Also covering mental health, relationships, career focus, and general life issues, the poetry is bitter sweet, amusing and thought provoking in turns.

Excerpt for Dead Dogs Don’t Bark

A follow on to the success of Dead Lions Don’t Roar, Dead Dogs Don’t Bark goes one step further. As well as self-motivation, Dead Dogs Don’t Bark digs deep into society, into behavior and into relationships that make existence worthwhile. An insight into the true power of the collection rings strong in the following snippet:

Cuddle up to Excellence

Else Mediocrity can catch up with you like a heatwave

Released in full force like a loaf oven baked

The days of long service awards are over

If your dream is to buy a Range Rover

Then you have to embrace excellence

This poem reinforces that it is healthy to have dreams and ambitions but that we must remember to strive for them and not just expect them … not taking things for granted and putting your best foot forward in life encapsulates the resonating theme of Dead Dogs Don’t Bark.

A Season of Thankfulness

This month November Think and Thank the Lord for his many blessings. We have been on bragging on God for 14 days now. During this 30 Day Season of Thankfulness, Brag on God for 30 days of thanks. Everyday give thanks. Of course we should always give thanks unto the Lord. Of course we should have grateful hearts all the time. Giving thanks is remembering what the Lord has done for you and to you, your family and the community. Praise is honoring the Lord for who He is – the Lord of Lords, the everlasting King.

We should have thankful hearts for the great things God has done in our lives.  In Psalm 107 some verses state:

“O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good: for His mercy and loving-kindness endure forever”. Psalm 107:1

“Oh, that men would praise the Lord for His goodness and loving-kindness and His wonderful works to the children of men! Ps. 107:21

“And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving and rehearse His deeds with shouts of joy and singing! Ps 107: 22

Remember to give thanks unto the Lord for all that He has done. Thank God for his timing and faithfulness in provision. Thank God for His peace. Think about His goodness to you and how He has allowed you to see another day .He has protected you from dangers seen and unseen. He has….

Begin to think and thank the Lord. Think and meditate on his loving kindness to you.  Then begin to thank God and brag on Him.

Walter Hawkins Lyrics from Be Grateful
(Be-e-e-e-e-e Grateful) Grateful
(Be-e-e-e-e-e Grateful) Be Grateful
Because there’s someone else who’s worse off than you
Be Grateful (Be Grateful)
Because there’s someone else who’d love to be in your shoes

God said he would, he would never, never forsake you!

So Vote and Pray!

The Election 2018, November 6,  2018  is 7 days away! So Pray and vote! Want to stop the racist tactic of gerrymandering ? So vote! Don’t want medical marijuana dispensaries or recreational drugs in your neighborhood where the owners don’t live in or would not allow into their neighborhoods? So vote!

Many hearts have been troubled, angered and disappointed with all that we have seen and heard on the news and in our community and nation this election year. Yet you must not let the enemy deter you from voting. God established government. He told us to pray for those in authority, 1 Timothy 2:2 and arguably to pray for those who seek  to rule over you. Pray and vote. Trust in the Lord and seek his wisdom and discernment for whom to cast your vote . Pray then vote.  Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.” –John 14:1

I challenge to encourage everyone to vote  and help get the elderly, youth and those without transportation to the polls.

It is imperative the we pray for and then vote in the 2018 local and state elections. We want to make wise decisions. However, we must pray for our cities local elections. Yes our hope and trust is not in the election but in God. But God states in  Jeremiah 29:7-” Seek peace and well-being for the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf; for in its peace (well-being) you will have peace”. Yes, pray and vote.  We need peace , effective social  and economic  services , a good educational system , and  to stop the violence that plagues our cities.

The Bible tells us to pray for those in authority over us and are in leadership. 1 Timothy 2: 1-2. This includes those who are seeking position in leadership. Throughout the Bible we see that when men and women of integrity were chosen by God’s standards the people and the nation fared well , were delivered out of adverse circumstances or diverted evil. “Righteousness exalts a nation..” The selection of leaders according to God’s leading and not out of racism and favoritism , can bring great blessing to a nation, city and state.

Pray:

Pray that people will vote with integrity and wisdom devoid of racism.
Pray that the attempts at election fraud or to stop minorities from voting by political schemes is thwarted and void.
Pray for divine order.

  • Pray for the election process- integrity, against voter suppression and racist tactics.
    • Pray for honest, compassionate, and concerned  for the poor  leaders. Pray for wise leaders with integrity will arise.
  • Pray for the judges of this nation, that they would seek the wisdom that comes from above.
    • Pray for the salvation of local government leaders.
    • Pray for the salvation of national government leaders

Pray for wisdom to vote for those who will provide a just government and not a government that exists to serve and profit itself.

.

Cry Out!

Remember we are God’s ambassador’s and we should take righteous action to carry out His purposes in the earth for the protection of the  poor, oppressed and hurting. God is concerned about government and nations, especially as they relate to issues of justice and oppression of their own people and obeying His Word.  We as a nation, even the church or the body of Christ have allowed our prejudices, racism and hatreds to divide us. We have tolerated and justified unjust and evil conduct from government and business leaders, and even in the church!

As God’s  ambassadors, we must believe God ‘s Word.  “‘Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to it; I will heal my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security.” –Jeremiah 33:6 We need the healing that only God can provide.

So Get out and vote!

Is Instagram for Lawyers?

Clear & Convincing Feature Article

Instagram is for Lawyers

“What is Instagram?” Lance asked Jennifer, an associate at L & L Law Firm. “It’s a social networking app,” she answered. “It’s made for sharing photos and videos from your smartphone.”

“Some of the lawyers were taking pictures around the courthouse this morning,” said Lance. “They said they were going to post them on Instagram. Should we be doing that?”

Instagram is a visual platform, based on pictures and videos. Like other social networks, you can interact with users by following them, being followed by them, liking, tagging, commenting, and private messaging. According to Instagram’s website, there are over 800M users and 500M daily active users. Eight out of ten users follow at least one business.

Instagram is good for building your brand by creating a visual story of your life in and out of the law. While the law may not be photogenic, the people working with the law are. Take pictures of the people behind the scenes at your office. Share a picture of a new associate coming in the door ready to work, or upload an image of your office manager blowing out the candles on their birthday cake.

Look for pictures of the firm’s community involvement. Take photos of lawyers and staff running in a marathon or distributing bicycle helmets. Some images might be connected to your legal expertise, such as a short clip of you speaking at a seminar. Others could connect to your niche practice, such as landscapes for environmental law, or office buildings for employment law. For a few ideas, spend some time researching to see what other lawyers are posting.

The law is a service business that’s all about building relationships. Using Instagram can help build a complete picture of who you are as a person and as a lawyer, making you more accessible to your clients.

How to Get Noticed on Instagram

Instagram users categorize their images using #hashtags. These hashtags help users find your posts. To help their search, the caption of your picture and the hashtags should be related. You can check out a hashtag before posting it by using Instagram’s search feature to see what other images and posts appear. You may find more hashtags that are applicable to your post.

Remember, Instagram is a social network, so keep ethics rules in mind, follow people, comment on their posts, and reply to the comments you have received.

Instagram is another marketing tool to have in your social media tool box. If you have clients who are in businesses such as food, fashion, design, or hospitality, they may be active on Instagram. Simply commenting or liking their post will help build a relationship with that client. Consider posting your own images and take some time to enjoy the images posted by others.

How to Turn Your LinkedIn Headline from Blah to Memorable Part 1

How to Turn Your LinkedIn Headline from Blah to Memorable

Ever tried to pat yourself on the back? Awkward, right?

So why are you still doing it in your LinkedIn headline?

I, me, my…

I am glad (and not suprised) you know who you are, but I am here to see what ‘who you are’ can do for me.

You see your LinkedIn headline should really be all about me.

When I read an ‘I, I, I…’ headline, I want to connect with you to see what I can do for you.

When I read a ‘You, you, you’ headline, I want to connect with you to see what you can do for me.

See the difference?

So how do you create that perfect headline that says ‘connect with me because of what I can do for you‘?

LinkedIn Headline Need-to-Know’s

First things first: what’s your LinkedIn headline?

It’s what appears right under your name.

A few quick LinkedIn headline pointers:

  • Your headline is the 1 – 3 lines underneath your name.
  • you have 120 characters including spaces for your headline.
  • Don’t just describe who you are and what you do.
  • Write a headline that contains a benefit to the viewer.
  • Use keywords others might use when needing your services.
  • Use commas or vertical bars (|) to separate phrases.
  • I suggest to avoid using symbols like ◊, ➤, etc – they certainly make your headline pop out, but not always in a good way.
  • NEVER use all uppercase letters.

Also, according to LinkedIn User Agreement, you agreed that you wouldn’t:

Add content that is not intended for, or inaccurate for, a designated field (e.g. submitting a telephone number in the “title” or any other field, or including telephone numbers, email addresses, street addresses or any personally identifiable information for which there is not a field provided by LinkedIn);

Thus:

  • Don’t add your email address, phone number, URL, etc. to your headline, since that’s not what it’s intended for.

Your LinkedIn Headline = Your “So What”

Here comes my favorite part of the post – the part where you and I are likely to disagree on.

When you first create your LinkedIn account, your LinkedIn headline is populated with your current job title and company name.

If you think that’s what your LinkedIn headline is for, you are sorely mistaken.

When I see headlines like that, I say to myself “So what?” and quickly move on.

Now some of you might’ve gone a step further and actually updated your LinkedIn headline to ‘better reflect who you are and what you do’.

Unfortunately, now you are just one of the multitude of…

  • Digital Marketing Experts,
  • Entrepreneurs,
  • Speakers,
  • Brand Evangelists,
  • Social Media Consultants,
  • SEO Consultants,
  • Internet Marketing Consultants,
  • Founders,
  • Coaches,
  • Experts,
  • Gurus,
  • …and so on and so forth.

I say that’s the quickest way to bury yourself among LinkedIn’s 30M users.

A successful LinkedIn headline should tell me what your value proposition or your ‘so what?’ is.

Social Media Consultant? So what? So I can show you how to master social media presence no matter what your niche is.

Coach? So what? So I can help you see the bottlenecks in your business you are too close to home to see.

Speaker? So what? So I can convert your next conference attendees into your brand’s raving fans.

See my point?

Feature (who you are) vs benefit (what you can do for them).

Now…

Examples of LinkedIn Headlines that Stand Out

You know that LinkedIn tool that shows you examples of what other users in your industry are using for their LinkedIn headlines? (it’s accessible in the ‘Edit Profile’ mode after you click on the headline editing pencil)

I think it’s a great tool to see what not to do.

However, I wouldn’t recommend trying to learn how to be memorable from those examples.

I did find a few interesting headline examples that stood out to me as I was going through comments on my latest LinkedIn posts, specifically the one about dumping Facebook.

(yes, it pays to comment on my posts… always!)

So here we go – the LinkedIn headlines that stood out:

Dan Stuart goes right for the benefit in his headline

Dennis Brown (one of my favorite peeps on Google+) – benefit-driven headline as well, even though I’d work on polishing it a bit more.

Russell Faust – definitely memorable, made me want to click on the link to learn more about him.

I also pulled some interesting headlines from my fellow TheLinkedInChallenge.com takers (the challenge is headed by Sarah Santacroce).

Not surprisingly, our first challenge was to create a memorable LinkedIn headline.

Let’s see how we did.

Susan James – short and to the point.

Catherine Crow – a great alternative to a ‘Social Media Consultant’, don’t you think?

Stephanie Calahan – creates powerful imagery through great descriptives in her LinkedIn headline.

Angela Edwards – if you want your team to be strategic, productive, and profitable, you can’t pass that headline.
